Siemens Cios Fusion vs. OEC 9900

For several years now, the OEC 9900 has enjoyed a "top shelf" status among C-arms, and for good reason. The 9900's design took all of the best elements of its predecessor (the similarly popular 9800), improved upon them, and added to them.

Now, however, Siemens has received FDA approval to begin distributing a new model that could bring some stiff competition to the 9900. That model, the Cios Fusion, is one of three new C-arms freshly approved from Siemens.

We took a closer look at the literature, made a few phone calls, and compiled a side-by-side comparison of the OEC 9900 and the Siemens Cios Fusion. Keep reading to see how they stack up.

What's the same?

Price: Pricing is very similar for both systems, ranging between $150,000 and $200,000 new.

Software Packages/Configurations: Both the Cios Fusion and the 9900 come in a variety of configurations, making them suitable for work ranging from basic surgery to neurovascular studies.

What's different?

Flat Panel Detector: The Cios Fusion has a flat panel digital detector, available in both 8"x8” and 12"x12” sizes. The 12"x12" gives you 60% more image viewing space than the 12” II on the 9900.

Imaging Matrix: The Cios Fusion features a 5k x 1k imaging chain while the 9900 has 1k x 1k.

Image Storage: The Fusion will hold 150,000 images. Onboard storage for the 9900 is 1,000 images.

Dose Efficiency: Siemens has equipped the Fusion with IDEAL (Intelligent Dose Efficiency Algorithm) dose management.

Interface Flexibility: Both systems have touchscreen interfaces. With the 9900 touchscreens are only on the monitor cart while the Fusion also has additional touchscreens on the C-arm and table-side in the sterile field.

Where the Cios Fusion wins

Peripheral and Advanced Ortho Applications: The Fusion's substantially larger field of view gives it an edge for peripheral and advanced orthopedic work.

Dose Efficiency: Siemens' IDEAL software helps increase dose efficiency with automated dose adjustments.

Where the 9900 wins

Power: At 15kW, the output of the 9900's generator is better suited for invasive vascular work or to power through the thicker anatomy of bariatric patients than the 3kW generator of the Cios Fusion.

Availability: For the facility that has the budgetary wherewithal, the Cios Fusion has an awful lot going for it. For those whose pockets may not be as deep, the 9900 is a solid, proven system that is available on the secondary market at much more affordable prices.
